Veterinary hospice is a specialised type of care for elderly animals, or those that have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. The goal of hospice and palliative care is to provide continual and dynamic medical care for your pet, as well as providing support and guidance for caregivers.
The aim of a hospice consultation is to improve your animal’s quality of life, eliminate suffering, and provide appropriate pain relief if needed. We also seek to improve overall mobility, appetite, hygiene, mental stimulation, and environmental enrichment.
The members of our hospice team will support you with education, how to recognize pain and suffering, problem solving, decision-making and preparing for loss. This will give your family time to come to terms with the diagnosis and spend quality time together until the end.
End-of-Life care can be started whenever you and your family decide to cease curative options for your pet. This will of course be dependent on the individual circumstances for each pet. Most of our hospice and palliative care patients typically have about 3-6 months left to live, but this type of care can be continued for as long as it is needed.
A palliative care plan is a plan created by your dedicated veterinarian to improve your pet’s physical, social and emotional well-being for as long as we possibly can. It will recommend necessary steps and prescribe any medication needed to improve quality of life.
